This marks the final stage of the Pekoe Trail—congratulations! Or perhaps it’s the first, if you’re walking the trail in reverse. Either way, enjoy the journey!
The trail begins in Kandapola, a bustling transit town located 14 km east of the regional capital, Nuwara Eliya. From the town center, take the road directly opposite the petrol station and follow it for approximately 1.6 km. At this point, the trail veers left, just in front of an old warehouse, and leads you out of the village and into the open tea estates.
For the next 8 km, the path follows tea estate tracks, offering little shade. Be prepared for sunny conditions with sun protection, or bring a warm layer and raincoat if the weather turns windy or rainy, as temperatures here can drop significantly.
The trail winds around the historic Courtlodge Tea Factory, established in 1890, and continues through serene tea trails. You’ll pass a remote village nestled at the far end of the valley, a glimpse into the quieter side of life in the hill country.
At the 6.3 km mark, you’ll reach the highest point of this stage, sitting at 2,108 meters above sea level. Continuing onward, the trail takes you past the manager’s bungalow at 9.1 km and gradually begins to descend at the 9.8 km mark. Keep an eye out for a small tea trail that branches left and zigzags down through lush tea fields. Ahead lies the Pedro Estate Tea Factory, one of the most renowned estates in the region, perched majestically overlooking the countryside. The factory offers guided tours—check online for details about costs and timings.
For an optional detour, look for a trail leading to Lover’s Leap at the 6.8 km mark. This waterfall is a popular destination, with its name rooted in a poignant legend. As the story goes, a prince lost his way while hunting and was rescued by a beautiful village maiden. They fell deeply in love, but their union was forbidden by the king and queen. Unable to be together in life, the lovers leapt to their deaths from the falls, seeking eternal unity.
The iconic Pedro Tea Estate marks the official end—or beginning—of the Pekoe Trail. From here, it’s just 3 km south to the center of Nuwara Eliya. For those needing transportation, a bus stop and tuk-tuks are readily available. If you have time, consider taking the fascinating guided tour offered by the Pedro Tea Estate for a deeper appreciation of the region’s tea heritage.
